Tips on How to Unlock a Steering Wheel

Hands on a steering wheel

In many cases, drivers don’t realize they’ve locked their steering wheel until they try to drive. If you’re having trouble starting your car, or if the key won’t turn in the ignition, the steering wheel might be locked. A locked steering wheel isn’t a cause for alarm; it typically happens accidentally and is easy to fix. Find out how to unlock a steering wheel below, courtesy of the Automotive Avenues service team.

How to Unlock Your Steering Wheel: Step-by-Step Guide

Fortunately, unlocking a steering wheel is easy. Here’s what to do:

  • Pull the wheel down in the same direction you did when the wheel was originally locked.
  • Not sure which direction to pull? Try both—the wheel will move a bit when you pull in the right direction.
  • While holding your steering wheel in the right direction, insert your key into the ignition and start the engine.
  • If the wheel doesn’t unlock and/or the engine doesn’t start, turn the wheel in the other direction and repeat the above step.
  • Your steering wheel should now be unlocked!

How to Unlock a Steering Wheel: Tips to Keep in Mind

Follow these tips to unlock your steering without causing damage:

  • Avoid Using Brute Force: You can’t use brute force to unlock a locked steering wheel; you may damage parts of the steering mechanism. Instead, follow the steps above while applying pressure.
  • Try a Different Key: If you can’t turn the key, the problem may be the key itself—not the steering wheel. The key may be worn and can no longer engage the car’s tumblers. If you suspect a problem with your key, Automotive Avenues can make you a new one.

How to Lock Your Steering Wheel Intentionally

Locking your steering wheel has its benefits. If you’re leaving your car in an unfamiliar area, you may want an extra level of security. This can make it more difficult for someone who shouldn’t be at the wheel to start your car. To lock your steering wheel intentionally, follow these quick and easy steps:

  • Turn off your car and take the keys out of the ignition.
  • Turn the steering wheel one way or the other until you hear a click.
  • Your steering wheel will lock until you return, unlock the steering wheel, and start your car.
