Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery

Your vehicle’s battery serves an important function. It provides the electrical energy needed to ignite the spark plugs and start the vehicle, as well as keeps the car running along with its accessory components like power windows, door locks, and more. Because the battery is a critical component of your vehicle, you want to make sure it is replaced correctly when the time comes. If you are not sure how to remove a car battery, we can help. The guide below discusses the steps for removing a car battery safely. If you do not feel comfortable taking out a car battery, this task can always be left up to your local service center.

Removing a Car Battery

Working with car batteries can be dangerous for Toms River and Trenton drivers. You should never touch a car battery terminal without wearing insulated work gloves. We also highly recommend wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes from corrosive battery agents. Before removing a car battery, make sure the car is off.

Along with the tips mentioned above, keep the following helpful hints in mind:

  • Use zip ties to keep battery cables in place so that they don’t touch.
  • Cover the positive battery cable end with a cloth once it is removed. This minimizes the risk of metal-to-metal contact.
  • Take off any jewelry or metal before taking out a car battery.
  • When removing a car battery, be in a well-ventilated area to protect yourself from outgassing from the flammable and dangerous liquid compounds used in your car battery.

How to Remove a Car Battery: Step-By-Step Guide

Here’s how to remove a car battery easily and safely:

  1. Find the negative battery terminal. It will typically have a black plastic cover and/or a minus sign.
  2. Locate the bolt head of the negative terminal. Hold it steady with a wrench or pliers.
  3. Use another set of pliers or a wrench to remove the nut.
  4. Pull off the negative cable. Make sure that it is placed safely away from the battery.
  5. Do the same for the positive cable. Take extra caution to ensure that the two battery cables do not touch!
  6. If the battery is held by a securing bracket, use the pliers or the wrench to remove the screws and bolts that keep it in place.
  7. Lift the battery straight out of the bracket. Car batteries can be heavy!
